Bairstow Eves was founded in 1899 and quickly developed a network of market leading branches in the Essex and North London areas. During the early 1980s it became one of the first estate agency groups to obtain a full stock exchange listing allowing it to embark on a rapid expansion programme. One of the most significant acquisitions was the Buckinghamshire-based Taylors Estate Agents network, which Bairstow Eves acquired in 1983. At the time the combined network of 33 branches made it the 3rd largest estate agents in the UK.
In 1985 Bairstow Eves merged with Mann & Co. The combined operations gave the new-formed group the largest network of offices in London and the Southeast. Hambros Bank held the largest share, and the Company became known as Hambro Countrywide Plc.
Several major acquisitions took place over the following years, building up a complimentary network of branches throughout most of the UK. In 1995 the Group acquired the estate agency chain from the Nationwide Building Society. This significant acquisition took the Group to over 700 branches. It was at this stage several new Companies were formed under the Countrywide umbrella including the Company now known as Bairstow Eves Central.
Today Countrywide Plc includes 23 of the most well known and successful operating names in the UK including Mann & Co, Abbotts, Dixons, Bridgfords and Taylors. Bairstow Eves is the most widely recognised of the Group trading names with over 220 branches operating under the Bairstow Eves name from Tyne & Wear in the North to Kent in the South. Each Company is managed by its own Board of Directors under the guidance of its own Managing Director.
